FHS students now have the power of choice!

FHS Course Catalog '07-'08 |
What does FHS have in common with Harvard? Good question, and a good answer… a course catalog!
This past spring, Foreman introduced the brand new course catalog. The booklet was distributed during an assembly that was organized to inform students about available courses. However, the course catalog was not created in the blink of an eye. There were several sponsors that contributed in the one month process. It was a joint effort.
One of the major coordinators in charge of the creation of the catalog was Ms. Overom. Ms. Overom informed us that this was the first time we had it professionally published and transferred into the school website. It was previously a booklet that was easily understood by our counselors. According to Ms. Overom, “It is important that students become involved in designing their schedules and know how to make their own selections rather than have school counselors choose classes for them. This empowers students to know what they need to make educated choices for their future.” The course catalog allows students to become independent and responsible teens.
The fifteen page booklet contains all of the information that is essential for the subject selection and availability based on grade level. Each individual course has a detailed summary of what it has to offer and what is required to be admitted into the course. The last page serves as a list of classes students should take based on their grade level, requirements by FHS, and the Board of Education. Ms. Overom also stated, “Our catalog helps students become informed about programming dates, available programs, class sizes, graduation requirements, and schedule changes.
In addition, new assemblies will be held in the future to re-inform students about the courses they may choose from. If students have a particular question, they can ask Ms. Overom directly or find more information in the school website under “Students”- Students Scheduling. |

The wonderful Ms. Joy Talos
One very important staff member to know is Ms. Joy Talos. Ms. Talos has been working at Foreman for 11 years and she has been working with youth for 19 years. She is well-known by staff members but not by students. For those who do not know exactly who Ms. Talos is, she is the pretty young lady at the front desk in the guidance office. Ms. Talos is a very hardworking woman and sometimes her work does get overwhelming. The students are the people who motivate her to come to work everyday. In fact, Ms. Talos didn’t always want to work with youth.
"I love being hardworking and it’s always a pleasure to be with the students. The students are the one’s who make me laugh. Working so hard makes my day go by faster."

She said, ”I wanted to be a rich person who never had to work a day in my life.” When asked about being hardworking she said, ”I love being hardworking and it’s always a pleasure to be with the students. The students are the one’s who make me laugh. Working so hard makes my day go by faster.” Outside of school, Ms. Talos takes care of her family aside from that she takes care of people who are handicapped . When asked about how she felt about the new security system she said, ”I like it. I think it’s controlling the school. I think it’s unfortunate for students 1st period because the students are late, they (the school) need more machines. It’s not fair for the students to get detentions for being late.” Ms. Talos has a very motherly feel about her. She makes you feel welcomed. So let’s hear it for the hardest working person at Foreman. Mrs. Talos is someone you should know. |

Two seniors, Debora Mendez and Venecia Navarrete, are definitely worth mentioning. Each of them won $10,000 scholarships for schools of their choice.
Debora Mendez is a hard working senior at Foreman. She has been taking Honors and AP classes for the past three years. “I like working hard. I know that it will help me in the future,” she stated. Debora is a proud A.V.I.D. student and that’s where she found out about the scholarship. “It’s the Nordstrom Scholarship. Mrs. Shoffer is the one that told me about it. She encouraged me and helped me fill out all the necessary forms for it,” Debora commented. Debora found out about her award during school. The scholarship officials along with Debora’s family came into her 2nd period class. “I froze when I saw the scholarship officials. When I saw my family come through the door, I knew that I won. I’m very excited and thankful for everything,” Debora described the experience. She is the only winner of the Nordstrom Scholarship from the Chicago Area.
Venecia Navarrete is our second scholarship winner. She is a hard working Honors and AP student. She won the Chicago Scholars Scholarship. “Winning this scholarship was a dream come true,” Venecia stated.
