8-0! Football runs off perfect season
By: Ryne Reynoso

Foreman High School Football Team

Every student and faculty member knows this year’s varsity football team has mowed down every team they’ve played against. The team’s touchdown passes, fierce hits, and miraculous comebacks in the second-half earned them an undefeated season. Preparation for this winning streak began all the way back in June and continued throughout the summer’s scorching heat. Seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen participated in summer camp to work hard and endure the spirit of the game. The players ran sprints and suicides while learning tackling techniques and how to execute their individual jobs correctly.

The team members became better football players and better representatives of Foreman High School. Head Coach Nikson taught the boys discipline and the notion of trying your best. He gave the players these words to live by: “Do the right thing, do the right thing all the time, and do the right thing even when no one is looking.” The team participated in 7 on 7 tournaments against schools such as Simeon, Bloom Township, Steinmetz, Taft, and many others. They deservingly won most and unfortunately lost a few. These tournaments took place at Chicago Academy and Elmwood Park High School.

The varsity team went through heaps of blood and sweat for their non-conference game against  Walter Payton (Home). Most of us know the rest of this Cinderella story; if you don’t know…

The game against the Clemente Wild Cats was a colossal win for the Hornets, making them CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS!!! That’s right, 8-0; a perfect season for both the hardworking players and their exceptional coaches, whose dedication and faith in the team had an enormous influence on the team’s triumph. I would like to personally thank the coaches for inspiring my teammates, and especially me, and for instilling hope for next year’s season.

THANK YOU COACHES!

FHS Girls Swim Team '08

The water polo team, girls swim team, and the boys’ swim team, run by Mrs. Olson and by Coach Phelan, are very fun, exciting and competitive water sports offered here in Foreman.

The first of these teams is the Girl’s Swim Team. Varsity Captain, Samantha Alicea and Junior Varsity Captain, Paulina Ruiz have high expectations for the team. “It’s not easy to swim 25 laps back and forth, but if  you believe you can do it and put your heart into it, you can do it!”, three-year swimmer, Mayra Mireles exclaims. The four year swimmers are Samantha Alicea and Jennifer Velez. Other swimmers like Jenny Flores, Paula Tito, Samantha Opio, Sandra Mendoza, and Diana Retana love the challenges that comes from being in such a competitive sport. Constant practice gave the girls have both strength and endurance. The City Relays proved evidence because they ranked 15th place out of the 25 competing schools. And with hard work comes the fun rewards. They have fun activities like Bowling and the Pizza Night. They have a motto on the back of their shirts that proudly proclaims: “Real Girls Swim.” We’re not arguing, girls - good job!

The Boy’s Swim Team does not lag behind the fun and success. The boys swim team’s record of won games last year was 8-3. They are very victorious and triumphant. The boys swim team have had great swimmers and still do. “Our team has an anthem,” Marvin Gomez quips, “(it’s) the Peanut Butter and Jelly song, which has a dance to it. If you want to see our song and our six-packs, come to our games!” These teams have so much fun in every game and they act like a team.

The water polo sport is not that known in Foreman. The purpose of that sport is to play soccer in the water. It is for both boys and girls and no experience is necessary. Some players like Marvin Gomez (a.k.a. Aquaman), Alex Arevale (a.k.a. Wolfie),  Mark Klimentowsky, Miguel Smith, Charllie Ceballos, Luis Montez, Damien Hernandez, Andres Larios, and Jose Rodriguez have great memories and fun moments from the boys swim team and the water polo from last year. The water polo and the boys swim team are similar because most of the players are the same and coach Phalan is the captain for both teams. The boys swim team starts right after girls swim team; water polo starts playing right after the boys swim team season.

Team M3 at the Chicago LaSalle Marathon 2007

The LaSalle Marathon is one of the top three marathons in the world. Since 1977, thousands of people and hundreds of organizations gather together and make this event possible. In 2006, Foreman High School was fortunate enough to be sponsored by the Marilyn G. Robb Foundation (MGR) creating the team M3. MGR is an organization that offers extracurricular activities to students of the community and throughout the U.S..

On Sunday October 7, 2007, twelve Foreman High School students and four teachers participated in the marathon. However, due to the lack of water, medical staff, and the record breaking heat, it was cancelled half way through. MGR’s team M3 was able to stay united as a team even in the face of disappointment. Many students, like Jesus Hernandez were displeased with the marathon being canceled. “I was disappointed and felt bad because I saw runners give up and push themselves to the point where they collapsed and fainted. Most of our team members were not allowed to finish due to the cancellation of the marathon,” he stated.

Mentors of Team M3 were inspired by the motivation of students and said, “We were proud and moved by the determination and commitment of students. It made us all proud to be part of an exceptional group called Team M3. We were all motivated to continue and not give up, even though some of us are older and have gone through much in life.”

The LaSalle Marathon requires participants to be 16 years old in order for them to run the whopping 26.2 miles. Luckily, one of the participants this year, Jerry Sotomajor, met the requirement on October 7, 2007.  Students interested in joining Team M3, be sure to watch out for sign up information in June 2008.
